Somalia: Protecting Childhood on the Front Lines of Crisis

Explore Somalia:

In a land shaped by drought, displacement, and conflict, children are fighting for more than food and shelter. They’re fighting for visibility, safety, and a place to call home.

The Situation for Children in Somalia

Somalia is one of the most challenging places in the world to be a child. Years of civil conflict, climate disasters, and institutional collapse have left millions of children vulnerable to hunger, exploitation, and neglect. These are the three most urgent challenges:

Widespread Displacement and Loss of Stability

Millions of children live in makeshift camps after being forced to flee drought, floods, or violence. Most lack consistent food, education, or emotional care — and grow up without a sense of home.

Severe Malnutrition and Health Crisis

Somalia has one of the highest child malnutrition rates globally. Many children are born into hunger and face life-threatening health issues without access to pediatric care or clean water.

Recruitment, Abuse, and Protection Failures in Conflict Zones

Armed groups continue to recruit children, while sexual violence and trafficking go largely unpunished. Child protection systems are underfunded, and survivors often receive no support.

Despite these challenges, Uganda’s children remain full of hope — dreaming of education, health, and opportunities for a better tomorrow.

How We Help Amplify Change in Somalia

At iam4allkids.org, we center the children who have lost everything — and support the organizations helping them rebuild, recover, and find safety. In Somalia, we amplify the work of grassroots heroes caring for those too often forgotten.

We:

  • Share stories of displaced children finding safety and support

  • Highlight community shelters, feeding clinics, and school tents

  • Advocate for emergency care, trauma healing, and long-term protection

In Somalia, survival is only the beginning. Every child deserves to thrive.

Why Somalia Is One of Our Focus Countries

Somalia is not just in crisis — it’s in urgent need of sustained care for children.

  • Nearly 1.5 million children are displaced, many without adult protection

  • Over 50 percent of children under five suffer from acute malnutrition

  • Armed conflict, poverty, and collapsed institutions put children at daily risk

We believe that even in Somalia’s hardest places, children can be protected, loved, and supported.

A Message of Hope From Somalia

Even where the world sees only crisis, care still takes root:

  • In dusty camps, children are learning to read beside donated chalkboards

  • In mobile clinics, babies once too weak to cry are gaining strength

  • In safe shelters, girls who fled violence are drawing their dreams in color

  • And because of your support, children in Somalia are no longer alone

Here, hope begins with a single safe place and someone who refuses to give up.

Key Event #1: Safe Learning Zones – Lower Shabelle Camps

Creating School Access for Displaced and Orphaned Children

In 2023, Elman Peace launched Safe Learning Zones in several displacement camps in Lower Shabelle. With donated tents, chalkboards, and peer mentors, over 500 children began learning again after years of interruption.

Youth who had never attended school now write their names, learn peacebuilding, and share meals together.

These spaces offer more than learning — they offer a future.

Key Event #2: Emergency Feeding Campaign – Mogadishu

Responding to Child Malnutrition With Urgent Nutritional Care

During a severe drought in 2024, SAACID led an emergency feeding campaign that reached over 3,000 children in informal settlements around Mogadishu. Their mobile clinics provided fortified porridge, rehydration therapy, and nutrition packets to families with no other support.

Mothers said they had walked for days just to find a meal for their babies.

SAACID made sure that journey ended in hope.
