Togo: Creating Opportunity for Children Beyond the Margins

Explore Togo:

In small villages and crowded urban centers, many children still face poverty, exploitation, and educational neglect. But across the country, local leaders are rewriting the story of what childhood can be.

The Situation for Children in Togo

Togo has made progress in health and education, but poverty, gender inequality, and lack of infrastructure continue to hold many children back. The most vulnerable are often invisible — trafficked, excluded, or left without care. These are the three most urgent challenges:

Child Trafficking and Domestic Exploitation

Many children are sent to cities or across borders to work as domestic servants, street vendors, or laborers. Some are trafficked under the guise of apprenticeships and face abuse and isolation far from home.

Gender Disparities in Education and Early Marriage

Girls in rural areas often drop out before secondary school due to early marriage, pregnancy, or cultural barriers. Legal protections exist but are rarely enforced at the community level.

Lack of Access to Healthcare and Clean Water in Rural Areas

In remote villages, children suffer from diarrhea, malaria, and malnutrition due to poor sanitation and limited access to clinics. Many walk long distances for care — or go without entirely.

Despite these challenges, Uganda’s children remain full of hope — dreaming of education, health, and opportunities for a better tomorrow.

How We Help Amplify Change in Togo

At iam4allkids.org, we stand with the children often overlooked — especially those who never make headlines. In Togo, we support the quiet work of justice, education, and care in communities where childhood is still a struggle.

We:

  • Share stories of girls returning to school after marriage or labor

  • Highlight shelters, advocacy programs, and rural health initiatives

  • Support grassroots leaders protecting children from trafficking and abuse

In Togo, every voice lifted creates space for a better future.

Why Togo Is One of Our Focus Countries

Togo may be small — but the challenges children face are enormous.

  • Nearly 30 percent of children experience child labor or trafficking

  • One in five girls is married before age 18

  • Rural children are often left behind due to poor infrastructure and underfunded services

We believe every child in Togo deserves safety, education, and the chance to be heard.

A Message of Hope From Togo

Even in silence, progress is being made:

  • In urban safe houses, children are learning to read after years of domestic labor

  • In villages, girls are returning to school with books and self-confidence

  • In clinics built by communities, babies are growing strong with clean water and care

  • And because of your support, these children are no longer alone

In Togo, hope grows one child at a time.

Key Contributor #1: Creuset Togo

Protecting Trafficked Children and Reuniting Families With Dignity

Creuset Togo leads national efforts to prevent child trafficking, rescue victims, and support their reintegration into family and school life. They operate safe shelters for children rescued from domestic servitude, market labor, and cross-border trafficking. Their team works closely with law enforcement and border officials to identify at-risk children and ensure they are not returned to harm. Counseling and school enrollment are central to their reintegration plans, along with community education to prevent re-trafficking. For every child they support, Creuset offers a path home — and a fresh start.

Key Contributor #2: ANADEB (National Grassroots Development Support Agency)

Bringing Clean Water and Nutrition to Rural Children

ANADEB focuses on improving health and well-being in Togo’s most remote areas. Through community-led initiatives, they build boreholes, install water filtration systems, and run school gardens to combat malnutrition. Their child-focused programs also train caregivers in hygiene, sanitation, and early childhood nutrition. In areas where health clinics are hours away, ANADEB empowers local women to monitor children’s growth and manage basic illnesses. They help ensure that even in the smallest villages, children have a chance to grow up healthy and strong.

Key Event #1: Rescue and Reintegration Week – Lomé and Kara

Supporting Survivors of Child Trafficking With Care and Opportunity

In 2023, Creuset Togo coordinated a weeklong rescue and reintegration effort across Lomé and Kara. Over 50 children were identified and removed from exploitative labor environments with the help of local authorities. At temporary shelters, they received meals, medical exams, counseling, and school readiness assessments. Many were reunited with family after careful evaluation, while others began long-term care programs. The event showed that with coordination and compassion, exploitation can be stopped.

Key Event #2: Clean Water Launch – Bassar District

Improving Child Health With Community-Owned Water Access

In early 2024, ANADEB launched a clean water initiative in Bassar district, where child illness rates had been rising due to contaminated sources. They installed three deep boreholes and trained village committees to manage them sustainably. Children participated in hygiene workshops and learned how clean water can protect their health. Mothers reported fewer cases of diarrhea and skin infection within weeks. This project turned water into a foundation for well-being.
