In communities hit by economic collapse, food shortages, and social breakdown, children are navigating loss and uncertainty. But across the country, local champions are creating safe paths forward.
Zimbabwe’s children are growing up in the midst of overlapping challenges — economic crisis, drought, and a collapsing social safety net. Many are hungry, out of school, or facing abuse in homes strained by poverty. These are the three most urgent challenges:
Years of drought and inflation have left millions without enough to eat. Children are especially affected, with high rates of stunting, malnutrition, and related health issues.
Many children cannot afford school fees, uniforms, or supplies — especially in rural areas. Some miss years of education and never return to class.
Stress from poverty and migration has led to rising child abuse and abandonment. Social services are underfunded, and children often lack protection or safe alternatives.
Despite these challenges, Uganda’s children remain full of hope — dreaming of education, health, and opportunities for a better tomorrow.

In Zimbabwe, compassion is survival — and survival is strength.
Simukai operates in Mutare and surrounding regions to support children facing abuse, family loss, or street life. Their team provides emergency shelter, food, psychosocial support, and reunification services for vulnerable children. Many arrive in need of safety after abuse or economic abandonment, and Simukai offers a space where healing can begin. The organization also works with police, schools, and families to prevent further exploitation and build long-term solutions. For children who have been left behind, Simukai becomes a place to start again.
BEAM works across Zimbabwe to help children at risk of dropping out by covering school fees, uniforms, and learning materials. They collaborate with local schools and parent groups to identify students in need and provide sustained support throughout the year. In many cases, children supported by BEAM are the first in their family to attend or finish school. The trust also offers mentorship programs to help students stay engaged and build confidence. BEAM is keeping classrooms full — one child at a time.
In 2023, Simukai expanded its emergency shelter in Mutare to accommodate more children affected by neglect, trafficking, or violence. New beds, play areas, and therapy spaces were added, giving dozens of children access to stable housing and healing activities. Staff created daily routines including school lessons, art therapy, and shared meals. Children who once lived in fear began laughing and rebuilding trust with adults. The expansion brought comfort where there was once only crisis.
In early 2024, BEAM Trust partnered with local leaders in the Midlands to identify out-of-school children and help them re-enroll. Volunteers distributed uniforms, exercise books, and transport stipends to families who couldn’t afford schooling. Teachers held orientation days to welcome returning students and build their confidence. Parents were encouraged to commit to education as a long-term goal. The initiative helped more than 800 children return to learning with dignity.
